It is my assumption that being born in Illinois and 11 years old that Caroline could not be his mother - she married Elisha after Cynthia died in 1859. Charles lives with his father (Elisha), his step-mother (Caroline), four siblings (Cynthia, Polly, Edwin, Fanny - the latter two are probably the children of Caroline), and Willima Witke, a 19 year old laborer, born in New York State. 107	In the 1850 U. S. Federal Census, Cynthia Ainesly Lakin is a 47 year old, white, married female [according to the census - she may be much older]. She lives with her husband, Elisha in Pampas Township, DeKalb County, Illinois. With the couple live seven children (Martha, 18, born in Pennsylvania; Vincent, 16, born in Pennsylvania; Elizabeth, 14, born in Pennsylvania; Esther, 10, born in New York; Cynthia, 8, born in Illinois; Polly, 6, born in Illinois; and Charles L., 1, born in Illinois). [EL 08.] [There is some question as to the birthdate for Cynthia. What I have used is the date provided on the tombstone in the cemetery near Elsworth, Iowa. This date could be wrong in the light of some of the birthdates of the children of Cynthia and Elisha Lakin. In the 1850 U.S. census, for example, Cynthia's age is listed as 47. Thus, there is a discrepancy between what appears on her tombstone and what appears in the 1850 U. S. Census. - DLL]] The obituary for Cynthia Ainesly [CA 02] is given: "Distressing Casualty On the 5th inst. the wife of Elisha Lakin, Esq., of Lakin's Grove, in this county, came to a sudden and unexpected death. She had been suffering from ill health, and had been in the habit of using morphine to alleviate her sufferings. During the absence of all the members of the family, except a little grandson, on Sunday evening, the 3rd inst., at an evening meeting, she administered morphine to herself-as she was suffering from disease--and when the family returned she was found insensible. Medical aid was obtained, and friends did everything that could be done to arrest the effect of the anodyne, but all the effects were useless. After lingering about 36 hours she died leaving a husband and a large circle of children to mourn her loss. A kind and industrious wife, a watchful and affectionate mother, and an esteemed neighbor has passed away. Mrs. Lakin was nearly 60 years of age. The family lives in the Town of Plover in Portage County, Wisconsin. [WJB 02.] I believe that Frances was married to Nathan J. Chesmore, Jr., and I have documented that fact. While I also believe that she may have died due to compilations of bearing her son, Clarence W. Chesmore in 1861, I cannot document that fact. WWW.Find A Grave does have a photograph of her headstone in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, Hamilton County, Iowa. I have included that photograph. However, the date on the Headstone is 1867. That date must be erroneous; the date could be 24 May 1861, but I have found nothing to corroborate it, thus it must remain a hypothetical date. She has lived in Iowa for 5 years. She was born in Indiana. I did not know at the time I included this census record that Maria Cooper Wiltsey and Talman Wiltsey were part of this family. It is important to know that they are related to George and Joanna. Levi Stearns is another farmer, but probably not related in any way. 124	In the 1850 U. S. Federal Census, Martin L. Root is a 13 year old, white, single male. He was born in New York State of parents who were also born in New York State. His father is a farmer with real estate worth $600. Martin L. lives with his parents, Martin and Olive, three brothers - Adolphus, Thomas, Reece, and one sister Angelina - all of whom where born in New York State. The family lives in Flint River township, Des Moines County Iowa. [RM 01.] In the 1856 Iowa State Census, Martin Root lives with his mother, Olive, who is 53 years old and was born in New York State. At this time she is a widow; she has lived in Iowa for eight years. She lives with two sons: Thomas, 26, born in New York State and has lived in Iowa for eight years; Martin, 17, also. Angelina is the only daughter, 14, was also born in New York State and has lived in Iowa for eight years. The family lives in Burlington Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. It appears that Martin first enlisted in the Illinois 9th Infantry Regiment in May of 1861 before he was in the 10th Missouri Cavalry. He was mustered out of the Illinois 9th Infantry on 26 Jul 1861 and then must have entered the Missouri 10th Cavalry. Martin Luther Root served in the Union Army in the 10th Missouri Cavalry Regiment. Here is some of the history of that unit: The regiment was organized in December 1863 using M. L. Young's 11th Mo. Cavalry Bn. as its nucleus. It had 559 officers and men. The 11th Mo. Cavalry Bn. was formed in the winter of 1862-1863 by reducing MacDonald's Mo. Cavalry Rgt. As a battalion and then a regiment, it served in C. Greene's and J. B. Clarke's brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. It fought at Helena, Ark. and Bayou Fourche, La. before being merged into the 10th Mo. Cavalry Rgt. As a regiment it took partin Price's 1864 Missouri expedition where it lost 16 killed, 56 wounded and 73 missing. It was included in the June 2, 1865 surrender of the Trans-Mississippi Department. In 1865, Martin L. Root paid an IRS Tax Assessment to keep a stallion in Richmond, Illinois. He is about 25 years old at the time. [MLR 02.] In the 1885 Iowa State Census, I could only find an index record. Thus there are no details of the Martin L. Root family. The only information provided is the following: Martin L. Root is 46 years old. He was born in the state of New York. He is married and is entitled to vote. He lives in Liberty Township, Hamilton County. The township number is 88, range 24, section 18. Other information I have provided in the resource. [MLR 03.] In the 1900 U. S. Federal Census, Martin L. Root is a 61 year old, white, widowed male. He is a farmer. He was born in New York State of parents who were also born in New York State. He has not been unemployed. He reads, writes, and speaks English. He owns his own farm, free and clear. He lives with two daughters, Sara (Lutia) and Cleo on a farm in Washington County, Prairie Township, Arkansas. [MLR 09.] In the 1910 U. S. Federal Census, there are a couple of unusual items. First, the initials of Martin Luther Root, ML are crossed out and those of his son, Frank S., are placed instead. However, the personal information of ML are still included such as age, 72, place of birth, New York State, and place of birth of parent, New York State. He is a farmer; he reads, writes, and speaks English; he owns his own farm, free and clear, but it appears that he does not wish anyone to know that he is a veteran of the Civil War. He lives with his daughter Lutie (Sarah) and Harold, who is declared a nephew, but who may really be a grandson, a son of Lutie. In addition, there are two boarders: Maggie Tharp and Harry Swekard. The latter two are not strange at all, for boarders were part of family life at this time. All of these people live in Prairie Township, Washington County, Arkansas. [MLR 12.] In the 1920 U. S. Federal Census, Martin L. Root is a 82 year old, white, widowed, male. He was born in New York State of parent who were born in New York State (father) and Massachusetts (mother), although this latter fact may be erroneous, since previous censuses have indicated that his mother was also born in New York State. His own home or farm is owned free and clear. He reads, writes, and speaks English. He is a farmer and his business is general farming. He works on his own account. Living with him is a daughter, Lois or (Lutie, Butie, Luttie, the name has never been clear, but I believe it is the same person) and her son, Harold, Martin's grandson. Alva Harrold also lives in the same household; he is a farm hand, 69 and a widower. The family lives in Washington County, the south-half of Prairie Township, Arkansas. OBITUARY: M. L. Root Succumbs to Double Pneumonia Martin L. Root, aged 85, father of Prof. F. S. Root of Fayetteville public schools, passed away at his rural home at one o'clock this afternoon. He had been ill for some time with pneumonia. Following a simple ceremony at the residence at 1;30 tomorrow, conducted by Rev. M. L. Gillespie, the body wil be taken to Webster City, Iowa, where it will be interred by the side of the wife of the deceased. Mr. Root was born in New York state October 9, 1837 but had lived in or near Fayetteville for more than 30 years. He was a veteran of the Civil War, Union army, and was with General Sherman in his march to the sea. For many years he has been an ardent advocate of woman suffrage and was a charter member of the Equal Suffrage League of this place. He is survived by his son, Prof. Root, three daughters and several grand-children. His son and daughters, Mrs. A. C. Ueker and Miss Luttie Root of this place, and his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. He was born in New York State. He lives with his wife, Anna, in Wakeman Township, Huron County, Ohio, near his father Samuel Welch and the rest of the Samuel Welch family. [BDW 03.] In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Bold Dighton Welch is a 31 year old, white male. He is a farmer with real estate valued at $900 and a personal estate valued at $200. He was born in New York State. He lives in Wakeman Township, Huron County, Ohio with his wife and four sons - Delos, Carlos, Harvey, and Lewis Marsac, near the Samuel Welch family. [BDW 04.] I have found an 1870 U. S. Federal Census for a Dighton Welsh, but there are so many misleading pieces of information that I cannot trust it like: an Inferred spouse: Pantha Welsh; Inferred children: Carley Welsh, Harvey Welsh, Eliza Welsh, Horace Welsh all with ages that do not make sense. And, Horace Welsh is not in the line of children for Bold Dighton. So, I am leaving this Federal Census out. [DLL.] In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, B. D. Welch is a boarder with the Lorenzo H. Tozak family in Vernon Township, Humboldt County, Iowa. He is a 53 year old, white, widowed male. He is a farmer who was born in New York state of parents who were born in New York state. It is not clear what he is doing in Iowa at this time. [BDW 05.] In the Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Hamilton and Wright Counties, Iowa, [BDW 06], under H. D. Welch, there is a paragraph about Bold Dighton and Anna Welch: "...D.B. Welch...was...a well-known pioneer of the county and a native of York state. The mother...was Anna (Bates) Welch, a native of New York State. The family left Huron County (Ohio) in 1854 and came to Linn county, Iowa, where they lived for two years and then returned to Ohio; here they resided until 1863, when they again returned to Iowa and located in Hardin County; later lived in Marshall County, and in 1868 came to Wright County, and settled on section 36, Woolstock township. ...[They] lived here for eighteen months and then returned to Ohio. the mother [Anna] died in Wakeman, Ohio, in 1870. The father now lives [1889] in Beadle county, Dakota." In the Welch Family family history, written by either Elsie or Barbara J. Welch, there are a couple of pages on Bold Dighton Welch, May 26, 1991, which are reproduced here [BDW 07]: "Bold Dighton grew up in Wakeman [Township, Huron County, Ohio] and eventually became a farmer and self-trained veterinarian. He married Anna Bates on November 01, 1847. She attended Oberlin College (1846-1847) and taught him to read and write. Anna Bates was also a descendant of Moses Bates, one of the "minute men" who marched to the aid of Concord in April of 1775. She came from New York. Like many another Victorian, She enjoyed the sentimental, often moralistic, poetry of the day. A copy of one favorite was carefully preserved by her husband in his copy of Dr. Chase's Recipes. It was to become a favorite of Elsie Welch Rushia who sang it while working around the house: In a graveyard lonely, many miles away. Lies your dear old mother 'neath the cold, cold clay. Memories of her now returning of her tears and sighs, If you love your mother, meet her in the skies. Listen to her pleading, "wandering boy come home," Lovingly entreating, do not longer roam. Let thy manhood waken, heaven ward lift thine eyes. If you love your mother, meet her in the skies. It continues in a similar manner for two more stanzas and choruses. They had one girl and six boys: Eliza, Dighton Carlos, Horace, Harvey ("Harvos"), Delos, and Lewis Massoc. A baby boy was still-born on January 15, 1870. The history of these years is told rather sketchily by D. C. Welch in his "A little History of My Life" which he wrote in 1932. About 1860, Bold Dighton "traded his Ohio home for some land in Hardin County, Iowa near Eldora." Owing to Bold Dighton's ill health, he returned briefly to Ohio in 1866, leaving his family briefly in Marietta, Iowa. They, then, moved back to Ohio. the family later moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where Bold Dighton bought a one-acre lot. D. C. Welch began attending school there. D. C. Welch recalled: "My brother and sold garden stuff and we had a two-wheeled cart we hauled all over town. Also, I remember we got the malt from the brewery to feed the mild cow, and I can see the stock crunching down the barley. Of course there was a saloon on every corner." From Marshalltown, the family moved to Wright County, some twenty-five miles between Marshalltown and Clemans Grove. This move was made in a wagon with the cows "following along." "We had some frontier experiences on the Wright County farm which father traded his Marshalltown property for at four dollars an acre. I think we killed 28 rattlesnakes the year we moved through, breaking up the prairie. Also, I can see in my imagination a great flock of crows, chickens, ducks, and geese. Plovers, wild pigeons, snipes, and other wild birds. This was about 1867. We lived on the farm until about 1870 when father moved back to Ohio and we as a family followed up. That winter my mother died was the commencement of years of trouble and there has been plenty of it ever since." Anna Bates died on January 18, 1870, three days after giving birth to a still-born child. Sometime later, Bold Dighton began courting other women, bouncing across the miles in a horse-drawn wagon. It was on one such excursion that he was started to find son Horace hiding in the wagon. Unfortunately, he had driven too far to turn back. Bold Dighton became a self-taught veterinarian. Shortly before his death, 29 January 1901, he wrote down his General Lineament Recipe for posterity: "Aqua Amonia 6 oz. Alcoho l6 oz. Olive Oi l6 oz. Oil of Camphor 4 oz. Oil of Terpentine 2 oz. Oil of Cloves 2 oz. Oil of Seneca 2 oz. Oil of Spike 2 oz. Tincture of Iodine 1 oz. Tincture of Capsioum 2 oz. Tincture of Cautharides 2 oz. Chloroform 2 oz." In the Webster City Journal, Webster City, Iowa, 01 February 1901, the following obituary appeared: "Death of an Old Settler B. D. Welch died at the home of his son D. C. Welch, in Woolstock, a few minutes after twelve 0'clock Tuesday morning of lung trouble, superinduced by the grip at the age of 72 years. Deceased was born in the state of New York in 1828 and was married in Ohio to Miss Anna Bates in 1847. They came to Iowa in 1860 and to Wright county in 1868, Mrs. Welch dying the following year. Mr. Welch lived with his sons in this city a couple of years some twenty-four years ago. Mr. Welch was a consistent Christian, a member of the Methodist church since childhood, and was willing to answer the final summons. Deceased leaves four sons, H. D. and D. C., of Woolstock, Harvey R. of this city, and H. H., of Carthage, South Dakota. The funeral was held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist church. " [BDW 01] In the Hamilton County Journal of Thursday, 31 January 1901, the following obituary was posted: "Death of B. D. Welch The death of B. D. Welch occurred at Woolstock, Iowa on Tuesday, Jan. 29th at 12:15 O'clock a.m. , at the home of his son D. C. Welch. He was one of the pioneer settlers of this section and his passing will be learned of with regret by many of the older residents of the city and county. Mr. Welch was born in New York state on July 17, 1828. He moved to Ohio when but a boy. In Ohio he was married in 1848 and came to this state in 1868 settling on a farm north of this city. He has since resided here except for a short time that he and his wife went back to Ohio to live when she died. He leaves four sons, D. C. of Woolstock; H.B. of this city; H. H., of South Dakota; and H. D. who resides north of the city. One daughter died at the age of twenty-one years. He was a man of high character, the best of habits, an earnest christian, a member of the M. E. church of this city and honored and respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held at the M. E. church at Woolstock this morning at 10:30. The services were conducted by Rev. Bristow, of the M. E. church assisted by the pastor of the Baptist church of that place. 146	In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Julia is a five year old, white, single female, born in "Ohio," as were her parents (Wilson and Jane). Actually, Margaret Jane Moore was born in Ohio, but Wilson was born in North Carolina. In the family, in addition to Julia, there are two other sisters (Sarah J. and probably Nancy) and three brothers (Andrew J., "Bolen," and John T.). They are living in Howard County, Howard Township, Indiana. [WB 06.] In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Julia Ann is a 16 year-old female, born in Indiana and going to school. [MJM 03.] While Julia Ann is listed in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census [MJM 03], but is not listed in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census [MJM 02], it is assumed that she died sometime between 1860 and 1870. She lives in Wakeman Township, Huron County, Ohio, with her parents (Samuel and Elizabeth), four brothers (Oscar, Nehemiah, Alpheus, Russell), two sisters (Betsy, Mary), a sister-in-law (Louisa), two nieces (Sarah, Louisa), one nephew (Abner), and Elias, a possible brother of Samuel. [SW 01.] In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Eunice - I believe is Julia because of her age - is a 27 year old, white female. She was born in New York state. She is living with her parents (Samuel and Betsy), a brother (Russell), who is dying, and two sisters (Betsy and Mary) in Wakeman Township, Huron County, Ohio. She and her husband are living with Samuel Welch in Wakeman Township, Huron County, Ohio. They live with Samuel and Elizabeth Welch, Russell's three brothers (Oscar, Nehemiah, Alpheus), three sisters (Betsy, Julia, and Mary), their three children (Sarah, Louisa, Abner) and Elias, a possible brother to Samuel. She is living with her parents (Jackson and Caroline), two brothers (William and Alexander), and one sister (Margaret). She too was born in Virginia. 150	In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Marie Bonebright is the wife of Frederick Bonebright. She is 37 years old, living with her husband and eight children, four girls (Elizabeth, Priscilla, Sarah, Rebecca, and Harriet) and three boys (Thomas, George, and John). They all live in the Town of Silver Creek, Stephenson County, Illinois. She probably moved from Lycoming County, Pennsylvania between 1847 and 1850 after Harriet Bonebright was born about 1847. [FBon 02.] In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, a Hannah Bonebright exists with daughters, E. A. or Elizabeth A., Sarah, Rabecca [sic], and Harriet. It is my belief, though I cannot prove it specifically, that Hannah Bonebright is Maria Bonebright, the wife of Frederick Bonebright. At this point, Hannah is a widow; Frederick could have died between 1850 and 1860. She is living in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois with these four daughters.
