    •        In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Alexander is a one year old, white male, born in Virginia, as were his parents (Jackson and Caroline). He is living with his parents, two sisters ( Eliza and Margaret). They are all living in the Western District, Nicholas County, Virginia. [JG 01.]
             In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Alexander is an eleven year old, white, male. He was born in Virginia of parents who were also born in Virginia. He lives with his parents (Jackson and Caroline), five sisters (Eliza J., Margaret, Martha, Mary, and Virginia), and one brother (John). He has attended school within the past year. [JG 02.]
             In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Alexander is a 21 year old, white, male, single farmer. He was born in Virginia. His personal estate is $700. He lives with his father (Jackson) and step-mother (June) in Hamilton Township, Hamilton County, Iowa. He has been in school in the past year. He also lives with one brother (John), one step-brother (Jackson), four sisters (Martha, Mary E. Virginia, Lucinda), and one step-sister (Esther). [JG 03.]
