  • Notes
    •        William Henry Pierce was born on April 08, 1824 in Windham, Windham County, Vermont to Ezra Pierce and Mary (Polly) Farr. [WHP 16.]
In the 1850 United States Federal Census for Vermont [WHP 09], William Henry Pierce is listed with his father, Ezra Pierce, as Henry. He is 26 years old; a laborer which probably means "farm laborer who was born in Vermont. Since there is no mark in column 13, Persons over 20 years of age who cannot read & write, it is assumed that "Henry" is literate.
On December 07, 1852, William Henry Pierce and Maria Burton were married. They were cousins. She was three years younger than William Henry. [DLL.]
The 1860 United States Federal Census for Iowa [WHP 07] indicates that William Henry Pierce is in Windham, Vermont. He is a 36 year old farmer. He is married to Maria who is 32 years of age. They have a daughter by the name of Ellen H., who is one year old. [DLL: Since the census was taken in 1860 and this daughter is 1 year old, I assume this person to really be Nellie H. Pierce, who died January 25, 1864 at age 5. See below.] The value of family's real estate is estimated at $4,000 and the value of the family's personal property is estimated at $2,850. A domestic, Sara A. Day, 17 years of age, and a farm laborer, Charles Grunel, live with the William H. Pierce family. Ezra Pierce and Esther (probably a sister) live close by [Dwelling 989, Family 273.] Several Farr families, possible relatives of Ezra's wife, Polly, also live near by.
In 1863, William Henry Pierce registered for the draft in the Civil War. He registered in Windham, Windham County, Vermont. He was registered as being 38 years old, a white person and a farmer. [WHP 15.]
The 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Iowa[WHP 03] shows William Henry Pierce in Boone Township in Hamilton County, Iowa on Written Page 50, Printed Page 55 as Pierce, William H.; age 46 (70-24 = 46); male; white; farmer; real estate is worth $1,500; personal estate is worth $470; place of birth is Vermont; mother is not foreign born; father is not foreign born; it appears that he is single, without children; he can read; write; is not deaf; is eligible for work; but, may not be eligible to vote since there is no mark in that column. No wife is listed with him. Maria died in 1870, most likely prior to the taking of the 1870 census. Nellie died in Vermont. William Henry is most likely without family. Yet, according to the census, he is surrounded by people from Vermont who are also farmers.
In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Iowa, William Henry Pierce is 55 years old, a farmer. He is married to Elida Bates. It shows he was born in Vermont of parents who were both from Vermont. Elida, 29, is listed as keeping house. She was born in Wisconsin of parents who are both from New York. Four sons are listed: Frederick 11, Charles 8, Frank 6, Ernest 4, all born of parents who came from Wisconsin and New York. Two other people are living with William Henry and Elida B. Pierce. It is difficult to read their names: One is a female, age 14, born in Iowa (Maggie Kohler?). The other is a 37 year old farm laborer (John Bussey?)
An 1885 Iowa Census [WHP 05] shows William Pierce a 58 year old, white, married male. He is a farmer. He was born in Vermont. His parents were both natives of the United States. He is entitled to vote. He is married to Elida Bates. Living with them are: Fred, Charles, Frank, William Bert, and Jennie Yaus. This family lives in Independence Township, Hamilton County, Iowa.
In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, William Henry Pierce, head of household, lives in Kamrar Village, Hamilton County, Iowa. He lives with his wife of 29 years, Elida, and a son, Guy, who is 14. He is white, male, and married. His birth month is April, 1824. He was born in Vermont of parents both born in Connecticut (Actually, his father was born in Vermont, and his mother in Massachusetts!). William H. can read, write, and speak English. He owns his farm and house, free and clear. He says that his occupation is "Capitalist." [The quotes are mine - DLL. Great grandfather W. H. must have had a sense of humor at 76 or he could also have been ironic with the person taking the census.]
In the 1905 Minnesota State Census, William Henry Pierce is an 81 year old, white, married male. He is married to Elida Pierce. According to the census report, William H. was born in Vermont of parents who were born in Connecticut (father) and Vermont (mother). [Note: Both of these places are incorrect - Ezra Pierce, the father of William H. was born in Vermont; Polly Farr was born in Massachusetts. DLL] William Henry and family have been a resident of the state of Minnesota for two years and Nilsen Township for one year and two months. He is a retired farmer. He lives with his wife, Elida, and two sons, Bert E. and Guy H. Pierce. They live in Nilsen Township, Wilkin County, Minnesota. [WHP 14.]
The property owned by William H. Pierce and sold to Frank O. Pierce in 1896 is described as follows: "East one half, South East Quarter Section #9, and the West one half of the South West Quarter of Section Ten (10) all in Township number Eighty-Eight (88) Range number Twenty Five (25) West of the 5th(?) Principle Meridian Iowa containing 160 acres." [FOP 03.]
According to a note written by Dale Lange's mother in a pitcher with its handle broken off, William Henry Pierce drove from Windham, Vermont to Webster City, Iowa in a covered wagon. In a letter from Burrill and Arloa Pierce (B&AP 02] the following statement was made: "We have William Henry Pierce was born in Vermont, April 08, 1824. His first wife was Ida Nellie and she and their daughter Nellie died the same day of diphtheria. He came to Webster City (IA) in 1866 at age 42 in a covered wagon, and settled on a farm a few miles from Webster City." [DLL: "While I do not wish to dispute Burrill and Arloa, I believe that I am required to least to challenge this information. I have established the first wife of WHP as Maria Burton, b. 1827; m. to WHP in 1852, and dying in 1870 in Webster City, Iowa. Her grave stone is in the same burial lot as that of WHP and Elida J. Bates. Unless, there was a first wife that I do not know about, I must assume that Maria Burton, daughter of Mary Pierce and Timothy Burton, was WHP's first wife. Mary Pierce is the daughter of Benjamin Pierce, a brother of Nehemiah Pierce, the father of Ezra Pierce, who is the father of WHP. Thus, Maria Burton is a cousin of WHP. Further, there are two markers in South Windham Cemetery that indicate two children were born to WHP and Maria Burton: That of Nellie H. Pierce, 5 years, 3 months, 21 days, died January 25, 1864; and, Infant Daughter of William H. & Maria B. Pierce, Died April 28, 1857. This information comes from notes of Paul K. West, a great grandson of WHP who visited Windham, VT, August 5 and 6, 2000 [PKW 01.] Thus, Maria Burton came west with WHP in 1866 without children. Maria died in 1870 and WHP remarried in 1871 to Elida J. Bates. Elida J. Bates is the daughter of William J. Bates and Mary Bunnell. William J. Bates was in Hamilton County, Iowa, as early as 1865 and was a neighbor of WHP. It is probably from that relationship that the marriage came about.]
It is highly likely that Frederick Pierce is the son of Maria Burton Pierce and William H. Pierce. In the 1900 census [FBP 01], Fred Pierce indicates that his birth date is in August of 1869. If that is the case, and I think it is, Fred is not the son of William H. Pierce and Elida J. Bates Pierce, but of William and Maria Burton. Thus, I have changed his birth year from 1873 as stated in CRP 05 to August of 1869 and his mother from Elida to Maria.
Gladys Pierce (Erdman) [GRP 05] writes:
"My Grandfather, William Henry Pierce was married to Elida Bates in Iowa. I think maybe she was from Bancroft, Iowa. [Note, DLL: Elida J. Bates was born in Wisconsin.] He was supposed to have come from Vermont, but I do not have a record of the town. One uncle told me he thought it was Windom [Windham], Vermont. He drove to Iowa in a covered wagon and settled at Webster City, Iowa in 1866. He lived on a farm near there and that was where I was born. One time Uncle Bert Pierce of Webster City showed me a row of maple trees that my Grandfather had planted on the driveway to the farm, but I couldn't locate it now. I have a pitcher that he brought from Vermont and my sister Mildred has a large platter. [Dale L. Lange, now has the pitcher; I do not know who has the platter.] [DLL, 2003]
I was told that three brothers left Vermont at the same time, but they never kept in touch with each other. One was supposed to have gone to Texas. [DLL: Note: There are many, many Pierces in Texas.]
My father and mother [Frank O. Pierce and Mabel Brewer Pierce] moved to Wilkin County in the early 1900s and settled in Connelly Township just two miles north and two miles east of Breckenridge, Minnesota.
Three brothers [of Frank O. Pierce], Bert, Guy, and Ernest, also moved to Breckenridge, Minnesota and lived at various places. My grandparents also came and at one time lived at the Camfield Home in Breckenridge. Later, they lived on or near the old Conzemius Farm along the river. Uncle Bert and Guy went back to Webster City, Iowa, later on.
William Henry Pierce had been married, I believe, in Vermont. He had a daughter, Nellie, deceased, as well as his first wife. At Webster City, he married Elida Bates and they had six sons."
It is interesting that the death certificate for W. H. Pierce indicates that he was a single person upon his death. I tried to obtain a clarification from the Wilkin County Treasurer's Office (Minnesota), but the response that I received indicated no further information was available. However, the 1905 Minnesota State Census shows him living with Elida, Bert, and Guy. Thus, it is likely that an error was made in the recording of the death certificate. At least, that is the hypothesis that is generated from the census record which was recorded approximately 18 months prior to William H. Pierce's death. [DLL.]
In the Webster City Freeman of January 19, 1876, a legal case was brought by W. H. Pierce against Hamilton County for damages occurred to him after falling off a bridge. William H. sought $10,000. [See WHP 10.]
