Lange, Robert M. and Amelia Lange - Wedding Photo Taken in South Dakota, after their marriage in Wisconsin |
Notes |
- By 1905, the Robert Lange family had moved from South Dakota to Wisconsin. It is my conjecture [DLL] that after marriage in Wisconsin, Emilie and Robert went to South Dakota to establish a homestead. When they had met homestead criteria, they probably sold the farm, moved back to Wisconsin, and bought a farm in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. This conjecture will need proof.

Notes |
- In the 1905 Wisconsin State Census, Armin Lange is a three year old, white, single male. He was born in Wisconsin of parents who were both born in Germany. He lives with his parents, Emilie and Robert, one sister, Ella, and five brothers (Arthur, Otto, Paul, Walter, Max) in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [RL 12.]
In the 1910 U. S. Federal Census, Armin Lange is an eight year old, white, single male. He was born in Wisconsin of parents who were born in Germany. Armin is not considered fluent in English, but he is going to school. He lives with his parents, Robert and Emelie, and six siblings (Ella, Arthur, Otto, Paul, Walter, Max) in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [RL 09.]
In the 1920 U. S. Federal Census, Armie Lange is a 21 year old, white, single male. Armie cannot be 21 at this point because he was born in 1902; he has to be but 18. So, he or the census taker has "fudged" his age for some reason. He was born in Wisconsin of parents who were both born in Germany and speak German as a native language. Armie speaks, reads, and writes English. He is a barber working in a barber shop. He lives with the Frank H. Hechert family in Hanson Township, Brown County, South Dakota. [AEL 04.]
I assume that the Armie Lange of the 1920 Census is my uncle. The name is somewhat distinctive and the only time that I found Armie in a census by himself, including 1930. I do not know why he is living in South Dakota at this point. He might have known the Frank H. Hechert family since the background of that family is similar to that of Armie. He might have already finished barbering school in Minnesota and moved to South Dakota in 1919, but this is only a guess.
In the 1930 U. S. Federal Census, Armin (Armie) E. Lange is a 27 year old, white, single male living at 3714 Lexington, precinct 39, Ward 29, of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was born in Wisconsin of parents who were both born in Germany and who both spoke German. He reads, writes, and speaks English. He works as a barber in a barber shop and is a wage or salary worker. He is a boarder, living in the home of Mary Lahey. [AEL 06.]
In the 1940 U. S. Federal Census, Armin E. Lange is a 38 year old, white, married male. He is married to Valerie. I could not find a last name for her other than the married name. Armie was born in Wisconsin. He was not attending college on March 1, 1940; in fact formal his education had stopped at the eighth grade. On April 1, 1935, Armie had lived in Chicago. Now he lived at 1276 Foundry in Arlington Heights Village, Wheeling township. He owns the house that is worth $4,000. It is not on a farm. He is at work. During the week of March 24, 1940, he worked 60 hours. He is a barber, working in a barbershop. He is classified as a private worker. In 1939, he worked fifty weeks for which he received $1,400and no extra salary or wages.
For the WWII Draft Cards Young Men, 1940-1947, Armin E. Lange provided the following information:
Name: Armie Edward Lange
Place of Residence: 1256 Kensington Road, Arlington Hts., Cook County, Illinois
Mailing Address: Same
Telephone: None
Age: 40
Date of Birth: Feb.16, 1902
Place of Birth: Fairchild, Wisc.
Name and Address of Person Who Will Always Know Your Address: Arthur Lange, Fairchild, Wisc.
Employer's Name and Address: John Richardson, 5349 No. Sheridan Road, Chgo, Ill.
Place of Employment or Business: 5349 No. Sheridan Rd., Chicago, Cook County, Ill.
Signature: Armie Edward Lange. [AEL 10.]
It is my understanding from the death certificate that Armin E. Lange was divorced at the time of death. We know from the census record that his wife's name was Valerie. If he had other wives, names are pure speculation.
To the knowledge of the compiler [Dale L. Lange], there were no descendants of Armin E. Lange.
Armin (probably Max and Walter also) attended barber college in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Armin was a barber at the Palmer House in Chicago for over 20 years. While Dale L. Lange can provide no documentation for this fact, this is an aspect of family oral history.
Armin was a barber at the Palmer House in Chicago for years. It is rumored that Morgan Beatty was a regular customer.
From Chicago, Armin moved to Baraboo, Wisconsin.
Dale L. Lange sang at the funeral of Armin E. Lange on May 23, 1970.
