Harold H. Burrows, 88, formerly of Fairchild, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 5, 2013, at Milestone Assisted Living in Eau Claire, in the care of Mayo Home Health and Hospice.
Harold Herman Burrows, son of William and Hilda (Hoffman) Burrows, was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Wilton, Wisconsin. He was baptized at the Norwalk Methodist Church in Norwalk. He attended Enterprise Country School in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, and his freshman year at Wilton High School. In 1939, his family moved to their farm in Fairchild, where he graduated from Fairchild High School in 1942. Harold farmed with his father, and after his father passed away in 1954, he continued to farm and also owned and operated Burrows Taxidermy for 51 years.
Harold married Alyce Gearing in 1973 at the United Methodist Church in Humbird. In addition to his love for taxidermy, he also enjoyed painting wildlife scenes. He and his brother built the wildlife display cases at the Augusta High School, painting the scenes within them and also mounted many of the animals that are on display to this day. He played a large roll in the wildlife exhibit that was built in Arcadia, which was later moved to Black River Falls.
Harold especially enjoyed raising lilies and over the years raised 160 different varieties, of which the stargazer was his favorite. He was a member of the Wisconsin Region Lily Society since 1984. He was a lifetime member of the Wisconsin Taxidermy Association and served on their board of directors. He was the recipient of many awards for both his taxidermy work and lily exhibits. Harold also served several years on the Fairchild Credit Union Board and was a member of the Fairchild Rod and Gun Club, where he had served as board treasurer. For many years he was also a member of the National Wildlife Federation.
Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church of Augusta, where he had served as a trustee. With several members of the church, Harold was instrumental in the formation of the Red Ties and sang with them from the formation in 1989, until they disbanded in 2010.
Harold will be deeply missed by his sister, Lillian Sonnenberg of Mount Horeb; sister-in-law, Phyllis Burrows of Eau Claire; 14 nieces and nephews and their families; and very special friend, Alyce Gearing of Neillsville. He was also preceded in death by his mother in 1988, siblings, Ronald at the age of one, Ruth Friskie and Allman Burrows.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Augusta, with Pastor Lon Jury officiating. Burial will be in Wonders Rest Cemetery in Norwalk, WI. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
