  • Notes
    •        In the 1895 Wisconsin State Census, there is very little information. However, the name William Bramer is listed with the following information: Two white males and four white females. Four are from the United States and two are from Germany. No ages, or names other than William Bramer are listed. The family does live in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [WAB 08.]
In the 1900 U. S. Federal Census, William Bramer [Bremmer in the census] was a 38 year old, white, married male. He has been married to Ida Zech for 13 years. He was born in Germany of parents who were also born in Germany. He arrived in the United States in 1882 and has been in the United States for 18 years. By occupation, William is as farmer. He has not been unemployed. He reads, writes, and speaks English. He owns his own farm through a mortgage. He lives with his wife, Ida, and five children (Anna, Ida, Alma, Arthur, Laura) in Cleveland township Jackson County, Wisconsin. [WAB 04.]
It is not clear to me [DLL] why the 1905 Wisconsin State Census is listed in Ida's name, but that is the case. In any case, Wilhelm is listed as a 49 year old, white male and head of the family. He was born in Germany as were his parents. He is a farmer who works 12 months in the year. He owns his farm free and clear. He lives with his wife, Ida, and six children: Anna, Ida, Alma, Arthur, Laura, Lydia. The family lives in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [ATZ 03.]
In the 1910 U. S. Federal Census, William A. Bramer is a 48 year old, white married male. He as been married to Ida Zech for 23 years. He was born in Germany of parents who were also born in Germany. He arrived in the United States in 1885. He is naturalized. He reads, writes, and speaks English. He is a farmer in the business of general farming; he works on his own account. He owns his own farm through a mortgage. He lives with his wife, Ida, and five children (Anna, Alma, Arthur, Laura, Lydia) in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [WAB 05.]
In the 1920 U. S. Federal Census, William A. Bramer is a 57 year old, white, married male. He owns his own home through a mortgage. He arrived in the U. S. in 1882 and was naturalized in 1906. He reads, writes, and speaks English, although his native language is German. He was born in West Prussia, Province Posen,. He is a framer, working in general farming on his own account. He lives with wife, Ida, and three children (Arthur, Laura, Lydia) in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [WAB 06.]
In the 1930 U. S. Federal Census, William Bramer is a 67 year old, white, married male. He married Ida Zech when he was 23 years of age. He was born in Germany of parents who were also born in Germany. German is his native language, but he also reads, writes, and speaks English. He entered the U. S. in 1880 and is a naturalized citizen. He is a highway patrolman by occupation, is classified as a worker, and was at work at the time of the census. He has never taken part in any U.S. military organization. He lives with his wife, Ida, in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [WAB 07.]
In the 1940 U. S. Federal Census, William Bramer is a 77 year old, white, married male. He is married to Ida Zech. He was born in Germany and is a naturalized citizen. He owns his farm the value of which is considered to be $1,000. He is not attending school or college or any kind, but has finished the equivalent of fourth grade. He has lived in the same house as on April 1, 1935. He lives on a farm with his wife, Ida. He works as a tavern operator. During the week of March 24-30, 1940, he worked 40 hours. He is classified as a person who works on his own account. He works 52 weeks in a year. During the 12 months ending 31 December 1939, he did received income of $50 or more from source other than money from wages or salary. He lives with his wife in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [WAB 09.]
According to Russell H. Sullivan [RHS 01], William Bramer came from Prussia, not too far from where Ida Zech was born. He left Prussia because he did not want to be drafted into the Prussian Army The two came to the United States on the same ship. It was after their arrival that they met. After marriage, The Bramers bought a farm three to five miles west of Fairchild, Wisconsin, on U.S. Highway 10. It consisted of 240 acres, 160 of which were tillable.
William and Ida, as she was known, gave up farming in 1924. They built a house about 1/3 of a mile from the farmstead and turned the farm over to Arthur Bramer. William and Ida had no running water or indoor toilet. Night lighting was done by lamplight. Electricity was installed sometime, but Russell does not know when. Ida and William did have an old "crank up" phone. [RHS 01.]
After William gave up farming, he did the township road work. He got road maintenance materials from a shale pit about 75 feet from his home. He was also chairman of the town board. [RHS 02.]
William was approximately 5'9" or 5'10" and weighed about 200 lbs. Both Ida and William could speak English quite well, but when it came to expressing themselves, it was done in German. When Laura, Ida and William conversed, it was mostly in German because it was more convenient. [RHS 02.]
The death certificate cannot be displayed because the Wisconsin State Vital Records Office has stamped the death certificate with language that says: "It is illegal to copy of publish this document in any print or electronic format." [DLL.]
