  • Notes
    • Russell Harry Sullivan,Sr. was a conductor on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad out of Madison, Wisconsin. He was raised by his grandparents, Amo, because of the death of his father. They were French Canadian. His father was Irish, probably born in 1862 and an locomotive engineer on the Great Northern Railroad out of St. Paul, Minnesota to Duluth, Minnesota. In 1901, he was killed in a train accident the same year that his son was born. He was involved in a strike related accident involving an open switch point. This caused his locomotive to roll over, killing him and a train man in a following car. The wife of Russell Harry's father was French Canadian with some Indian connections. [RHS 01, RHS 02, RHS 04]

I, Dale L. Lange, am including here an email that I received from Russell Harry Sullivan, Jr. on July 21, 2003. It contains some of the same information that is included above, but also much more. It needs to be preserved about Russel Harry Sullivan, Sr. and his father, Harry Sullivan.

      Dale--
Father's birth date--July 29-02 or o3--Court records - Hennepin County, Minn were lost in a fire sometime prior to 1935. I remember that he went to the Twin Cities several times to retrieve info about his date of birth. The Railroad Retirement Board accepted bible records from a relative indicating 1902 as his birth date. All of that took place in 1935--The start of Railroad Retirement--He died in June, 1976.
He attended school in Hixton or Alma Center, Wisc--they are close together. I am sure he finished high school there. He was raised by his grandparents. Their name was Amo. They came from French Canada. Somewhere along that blood line, Indian blood was mixed in. His father was Irish. The only info i have on him came from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. They have a record of him being born in1862. The B.L.E. records were lost by water damage in their bldg many years ago--long before micro film. He was a locomotive engineer on The Great Northern R.R. He worked between the Twin Cities and Duluth, Minn. He was killed the same year he (my father) was born. He was involved in a strike related accident involving an open switch point. This caused his locomotive to roll over killing him and a train man in a following car. I have a photo of him standing next to a locomotive. He looks like he may have been about 6' tall. His death may have been the reason that he (my father) was raised by his grandparents. I have tried to get info on my Grandfather (Harry Sullivan) thru the B.L.E. - No Luck. I thought that the B.L.E. could get records from The Great Northern RR. Due to the consolidating of various railroads, these records may have been lost. I have tried various routes of inquiry, but to no avail.
I will close for now--I have probably bored you enough with the above.
I will complete your info request later. [RHS 04.]
Any info you send I can retrieve via my printer. For now RUSS
