    • William Karl and Christine met in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where Christine was working as a hired girl and William K. was wrecking an old building. William told Christine to stay inside the house for fear the old wall would fall on her, that he was waling on that very wall! That was the beginning of their romance. They were married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, lived there for a short while, then moved to Crookston, then to Red Lake Falls, and then back to Crookston.

[There are two somewhat conflicting bits of information in this document so, they are both included. DLL]
Christine Rosenthal was probably born August 06, 1854 in the Township of Addison in Washington County, Wisconsin. Although her obituary states that she was born near Milwaukee, he parents appear in both the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census of Washington County's Addison township, where several other families of Rosenthal relatives also lived; and, in the 1855 Wisconsin Census also lists the Gottlieb Rosenthal family in the Town of Addison. Since Washington County is sufficiently close to Milwaukee (about 40 miles), we are assuming that the obituary was only stating the general location of her birth because no other source has given proof of Milwaukee as being her birthplace.
Christina's parents were Gottlieb Rosenthal and probably his first wife, Ernestine, who was called "Ann" in the 1850 Census. Her mother evidently died when Christina was a small child because the 1860 Census does not list her but, instead, lists "Rosanna," age 21. Because Rosanna was rather young at age 21 to have been Christina's mother, and because there is a gap of four years between Christina and the next child, it is most likely that Ernestina of "Ann" was Christina's mother.
The obituary states that Christina was confirmed a a very early age in the German Lutheran Church. That would be the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in the Township of Addison in Washington County, where the other Rosenthal families also belonged. In fact, her father and uncles had helped to organize the church, which was founded in 1856.
During the 1860's, Christina moved with her family to Chippewa County near Caddott, Wisconsin. They traveled by ox-cart and oxen along with another family. It was there that she apparently met and married her husband. He obituary states that she was married, January 02, 1876, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, but the Chippewa County marriage record shows the date as January 21, 1877. She married William Erdmann, who was a builder and contractor in Chippewa Falls. He had been born in Prussia, and he was the son of William and Sophia Erdmann. Christine (who was listed as Christina in census records and as "Chrisian" on the marriage record) probably was given the German version of the name at birth, which was "Christiane" and later had it "Americanized" from Christina to Christine.
Two daughters were born to them in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Then, in 1879, Christine and her husband moved to Crookston, Minnesota, where they had seven more children; five children died in infancy. In 1898, her husband, William, also died. Then, on May 6, 1947, at the age of 93, Christina died suddenly at her home in the city of Crookston, where she had been a resident for nearly 70 years.
Christine Rosenthal, Daughter of Gottlieb Rosenthal and Amelia Wiese
Married in Germany, moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Christine was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Her mother died when Christine was four years old. He father remarried and Christine, her brother, and sisters were raised by a stepmother along with a large step-family. (From Grandma's description of the stepmother, I recall likening her to Cinderella's Stepmother) [This latter statement comes from Betty Nisbet, Karl's cousin.] Christine had very little schooling and couldn't read or write until after she was married. (Grandpa taught her to read and write.) [Again, Betty Nisbet.]
