S. Federal Census, August (Agust) West is a 27 year old white, married male. He is married to (Julianna) Bertha Menge. He was born in Russia of parents who were also born in Russia. His native language is Russian. However, he speaks, reads, and writes English. He immigrated the United States in 1911; in 1920 is considered an alien. He is a farmer by profession, working in the area of general farming, working on his own account. He lives with his wife Bertha and two children, Frank and Doris. The family lives in Binghamton Township, Barnes County, North Dakota. [WA 07.]        In the 1925 North Dakota State Census, August West is a 30 year old male, who appears to be a U. S. Citizen. August lives with his wife, Bertha and seven children: Frank, Doris, Alice, Florence, Lyle, Rusty, and his twin brother, Ross. The family lives in Greene Township, Ransom county, North Dakota. There is not much further information given. [WA 09.]        In the 1930 U. S. Federal Census, August West is a 35 year old, white, married male. Her is married to (Julianna) Bertha Menge West. He married her at the age of 21. He has not attended school or college since Sept. 1, 1929. He is able to read, write, and speak English. Interestingly enough, the Record indicates that his country of birth and that of his parents is Germany. That information contradicts the information provided in both the 1920 Census Record, which indicates that he was born in Russia of Russian parentage. Similarly, the 1930 Record indicates that the language spoken in home before coming to the United state is "unknown," when the 1920 Record indicates that his native language is Russian. I wonder why these changes have been made. But going on: The year in which August immigrated is 1911 and it is possible that in 1930 his first papers toward naturalization have been submitted. That is what Pa means in slot 23. August's Occupation is Section Labor on the Railroad, I am assuming the Northern Pacific Railway, where he is employed as a worker. He has never been a member of the U. S. Military. August lives with his wife, Bertha and seven children: Frank, Doris, Alice, Florence, Lyle, Rusty, Ross. The family lives in the town of Dilworth, Clay County, Minnesota. [WA 08.]        In the 1940 U. S. Federal Census, August West is a 46 year old, white, married male. he is married to Bertha Menge. The Record indicates that he was born in Germany, but that is erroneous because all of the information that is available above indicates that he was born in Russia and that his native language is Russian. We do not know why this erroneous information continues to be given. He has not attended school or college since March 1 of 1940, but he has completed the equivalent of four years of schooling. He has lived in Riverton Township Clay County since 1935 on a farm. As far as citizenship is concerned, he has his first papers. He owns his home, which has a value of $500. His occupation is that of Section Hand on the Rail Road. He worked 48 hours the week prior to the Census. He worked 12 weeks up to March 30, 1940. He is classified as a wage worker in private work. In 1939, he worked 38 week. His income is $700. August has income from other sources. August lives with his wife, Bertha and seven children: Frank, Lyle, Ross, Rusty, Thomas, Kenneth, and Florence.
